Merry Christmas

Saturday December 8th
10:30 a.m. children’s Christmas craft time at Burnt River Library.

Sunday, December 9th     
St. Luke’s Anglican Church and BRASS present the annual Community Potluck Christmas dinner at the Community Centre.  Everyone is welcome.  There will be a Toonie Table as well as a delicious dinner.  Following dinner, there will be a candlelight parade to St. Luke’s Anglican Church for a special carol service.  Come out and join in for any or all of these events.
            4:30ish for non alcoholic punch,  toonie table           5:30 for dinner
            6:30 for candlelight parade                                        7:00 for carol service

Wednesday December 12th  
Diners’ Dinner will begin at 11 a.m. because there will be entertainment.  A country auction will also be featured. 

Sunday, December 23rd
Burnt River United Church will be hosting their annual CHRISTMAS PROGRAM, in which all of the congregation take part, commencing at 7:30 pm for an hour, with LUNCH served after.  All are welcome.  There are still copies of the Historic Cook Book available…a great Christmas gift.
     
In January I would like to send out a “year-at-a-glance” for 2013 to allow everyone to mark their calendars for the many events held in our community.  Please send any information as soon as possible.

BURNT RIVER ACTIVITIES GUIDE
    November 2012   
Saturday November 3rd
Community Christmas Craft Sale 10 am to 3 pm, sponsored by the
Burnt River United Church UCW at the B.R. Community Centre.  At this event 28 vendors will be showing their crafts, and our hand-made, queen-size Quilt, and an afghan, will be raffled at approx. 2:30 pm.  Tickets will be available that Saturday, before the items
are raffled.  Proceeds go to the Coboconk Elementary School
Breakfast Fund and the Mission and Service Fund of the United Church.
            There is also a lunch being offered for sale by the ladies of the UCW,
and we are commencing selling of our Historic Cook Book we produced
in the 70's, plus new recipes from the second and third generations of the
families, plus  historic pictures we have gathered of the ladies contributing and the church events in general over the past 50 years or so. We hope you will enjoy it. 
At this time we would also like to thank everyone who has contributed 
to our campaign for funds to put a new galvanized steel roof on our  church.
We have almost reached our goal of $7000 and the roofers are finishing up the project.  It is gratifying to know that we won't have a leaky roof this winter, and we greatly appreciate everyone's generosity.

Story time and craft at Burnt River Library at 10:30 a.m.
            Every Monday children 6-12 are invited to attend “Homework Club” from 4 – 5 p.m.

Sunday November 11th
There will be a Remembrance Day Service at 9:00 a.m. at the Burnt River Cemetery.  The Kinmount Legion Colour Party will be in attendance.  All are cordially invited.                                                                                          
Wednesday, November 28th   
            Diners’ Dinner at Burnt River Centre will start at noon.


***Burnt River Firefighters would like to remind you to please remember when you return to standard time to check your smoke alarm and replace the battery. Remember, smoke alarms save lives, and it also the law to have working smoke alarms on every floor and out side sleeping areas.

Saturday, October 6th
St. Luke’s Anglican Church is sponsoring their annual Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner at the Community Centre from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.  Admission is $12.50 for adults, $6.00 for children and preschoolers are free.  Come and enjoy a delicious meal.

October 7th to October 13th
is Fire Prevention  WeekMany homes in Kawartha Lakes may not have any smoke alarms, not enough smoke alarms, alarms that are too old, or alarms that are not working. Kawartha Lakes Fire & Rescue Service wants residents to understand that working smoke alarms are needed in every home, on every level (including basement), outside each sleeping area and inside each bedroom. And, if a smoke alarm is 10 years old or older, it needs to be replaced.

To celebrate Ontario Library Week there will be a Library Coffee Hour at 10:30 a.m. featuring “Get to Know a Reading Club”.  Have you always wanted to start a Reading Club but never knew how?  Come out and meet some members and find out what goes on at a typical club meeting, what books have been read and what books are planned for the future.

Wednesday, October 31st  
Again this year the Burnt River Fire Hall will be open on Halloween night.   Parents can bring the children in to the hall any time from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Treats are available. 

Saturday, November 3rd   
Burnt River United Church Women present their annual Christmas Craft Sale at the Burnt River Centre from 10:00 am to 3:00 pmThis year we have as always there is a wonderful selection of vendors selling their wares. Free entrance to the sale, but a food donation for the food bank would be greatly appreciated!  The UCW is offering a lovely reasonable lunch. The draw for Quilt and other items will be at 3:00 pm.  For table rentals please call Patricia  705 488 3328 .

Meals on wheels will commence.  A nutritious and delicious meal at affordable prices are delivered right to the door through Meals on Wheels to seniors, people with disabilities, and people recovering from illness or injury. Mark your calendar for "Community Care Somerville Diner's Dinner Club" at Burnt River Community Centre, 1200 p.m. noon sharp. Enjoy a delicious, hot, sit-down meal.  Everyone is welcome. Health Beat outdoor fitness system
I had the opportunity to use the Health Beat outdoor fitness system. The three pieces of equipment available were the cardio stepper, chest/back press and the ab crunch/leg lift. Go to www.playlsi.com, New Products, Health Beat Stretch. A column will come on the left side of the page for you to click and see all of the different systems available. I would like to have some of these available in our community. Anyone interested in checking this out, please contact Noni at 705-454-8007.

Is anyone interested in converting their hand written recipes to computer format? I need help with the computer skills to do this. If you are interested in getting together on Monday evenings to accomplish this task, please call Noni at 705-454-8007.

We are in need of buttons - all shapes and sizes for children’s’ crafts both at the Library and Sunday school.  If you have any, please bring them to the Library or put them in the drop box outside the Library.  Thanks.

Saturday Aug. 4th      
Annual GIANT BAKE AND GARAGE SALE. Loads of good finds, and great baking!   Commencing 9:00 am thru l:30 pm at the United Church. Hall, 196 Burnt River Road. 
 Also BOOK SALE for ART SHOW/2011.

Sunday Aug. 5th                  
Decoration Day at the Burnt River Cemetery, service commencing at 2:30 pm.

Saturday, Sunday & Monday Aug. 4th, 5th &6th 
Burnt River Bullies Annual Mixed Lob Ball Tournament at Burnt River Ball Park.  Snack Shack Breakfasts available from B.R. Firefighters, Barbecue and liquid refreshments from the B.R. Bullies.  See you at the ball park.

Story time and craft at Burnt River Library at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday Aug. 11th   (rain day Aug. 12)
Burnt River United Church is hosting a Garden Tour to help fundraising for the local ART/2012 Show.  A number of patrons have volunteered to show their local gardens from 1:30 to 3:30.  A map will be provided when you register at B.R. United Church,196 Burnt River Road  before you start.  At the end a Victorian Tea will be provided on the lawn, catered by the women of the church.  There is a fee of $9 per person. 

Saturday Aug. 18th  
Burnt River United Church is holding its annual summer smorgasbord supper commencing at 4 pm thru 6:30 pm.  Both hot and cold entrees, and home-made pies for dessert at the Burnt River Centre.
Adults $14.00  Children 6 -12 years $3.50, Kindergarten, younger free.

Art/2010 Show  held in conjunction from 1 to 7 pm.

Burnt River United Church is starting a fund-raising campaign to help with the cost of installing a new galvanized roof this coming fall.  This is an  immediate necessity since the 16 yr old shingles have not held particularly on the south side.  The goal would be $7000 for a complete roof or $3500 for half a roof.  To donate, contact June Hunter at 454-8045 or 1653.
