AUGUST 2010

BURNT RIVER COMMUNITY CENTRE UPDATE
From time to time the Management Board receives inquiries as to whether the Community Centre is self-sufficient operating in the black. The simple answer is “NO”—not without substantial financial support from the City. To illustrate, in 2009 the Volunteer Management Board’s operating budget was approximately $26000 which included a $15000 subsidy from the CoKL with the balance ($11000) coming from local rental income, donations etc. The Management Board’s mandate is to cover general maintenance and custodial expenses. In addition to the $15000 subsidy, the City also covers heating and electrical costs which in 2009 amounted to approximately $20000; as well the City covers the mandatory water and fire inspections and on-going maintenance; telephone expenses; grading, graveling and snowploughing; seasonal rental of one outdoor toilet for park; and all Capital expenses-such as the current project to replace the tired heating system estimated to cost about 15000. The 2009 total operational expenses for the Burnt River Community Centre was approximately $50000 with the City covering over 75% of that amount. In summary, we have a wonderful Community facility, thanks to the efforts of volunteers, user groups and particularly the on-going financial commitment by the City of Kawartha Lakes. Much appreciated!

Thought for the Month: “ We are going to have to cut down on our spending,” said the distressed husband.
“Well, we can start by not buying any more of your beer,” replied the irritated wife.
“How about wiping out all of your cosmetics bills?” retorted the husband.
“But those are to make me look pretty for you,” said the wife coyly.
“That,” said the husband, “is what the beer is for!”
